Flipkart Green: A step toward Sustainable Development

The 21st-century world is more concerned about sustainable development than at any time in history. Sustainable development has become essential for the survival of our future generations. It involves using natural resources organically and responsibly without overusing them, balancing economic growth with environmental preservation, and ensuring that future generations have access to the necessary resources to meet their needs. Achieving sustainable development requires promoting environmentally friendly and biodegradable products and implementing sustainable resource replacement or replenishment plans.
Promoting Sustainable Products

Non-governmental organizations and self-help groups worldwide are working to educate people about the benefits of using sustainable products. This has led to a significant increase in demand for sustainable products in recent years. The 2021 Voice of the Consumer: Lifestyles Survey, conducted by Euromonitor International, illustrates this trend by showing that a significant proportion of consumers is emerging in developing world markets. Almost 35% of customers purchased sustainable goods. This indicates that interest in sustainable products is not limited to developed or Western markets alone.

India’s Growing Market

In India, according to a recent survey by consulting company Bain & Company, 60% of consumers are willing to pay more for “sustainable products,” and 52% of those in urban India anticipate increasing their expenditure on eco-friendly companies over the next three years. This creates a huge market potential and a consumer trend that adds value and benefits investors, businesses, and the environment.

What is Flipkart Green?

Looking forward to this growing market, Flipkart has introduced “Flipkart Green,” a virtual store on its app that features a wide selection of sustainable products for customers interested in living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. “Flipkart Green” aims to make it easier for customers to find and purchase globally certified sustainable products from a wide range of categories. Initially, the virtual store will feature a large selection of fashion, beauty, grooming, healthcare, food, and home and lifestyle products from over 40 brands. In addition, the section will include products from additional categories such as healthcare, food, sports and fitness, toys, stationery, electronics, and appliances.

Future Plans for Sustainable Growth

Besides this, Flipkart has planned various future initiatives and made sustainability a central part of its mission to expand e-commerce in India. Over the past two years, it has taken multiple steps to protect the environment. These include:

  • They are partnering with Canopy Planet, a non-profit environmental organization, to ensure responsible sourcing of sustainable packaging and manufactured cellulosic fibers, and participating in the Pack4Good and CanopyStyle initiatives.
  • They are Joining the Climate Group’s global electric mobility initiative, EV100, and pledging to use only electric vehicles in its logistics fleet by 2030.
  • Flipkart is the only e-commerce company in India to pledge net-zero targets by 2040, in line with the Indian government’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Flipkart is among several companies taking steps to tap into the growing market for sustainable products, such as Sustain Natural, IKEA, and Patanjali Ayurveda. However, Flipkart has a distinct advantage with its strong delivery chain. In addition, the increasing demand for sustainable products benefits India, as it helps the country meet its environmental commitments and achieve net zero emissions by 2070 while also supporting the economy.
