Dmrc Story: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) operates the Delhi Metro, the public transit system serving India’s national capital region. Established through a partnership between the Central Government and Delhi’s state authorities, the DMRC aims to provide passengers with an affordable, comfortable, eco-friendly transport option.
The Delhi Metro, known as the DMRC, has been transformational for the region. Its rail network connects key parts of Delhi, including vital connectivity between the airport and the city. This has elevated Delhi’s status as a global city at par with top urban centers around the world. Beyond efficient urban mobility, the DMRC Story unfolds as the Delhi Metro has also achieved global recognition for its sustainability efforts. It is the first metro rail system internationally certified by the United Nations for substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The DMRC Story continues to shape urban transport, making Delhi a beacon of innovation and environmental responsibility.
Over its journey, the DMRC has redefined public transportation in India while positioning itself as a leader in environmental stewardship worldwide. As Delhi Metro celebrates 25 successful years, it continues to shape a greener and more connected future for India’s capital region.
DMRC Story: How It All Started?
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established on May 3, 1995, as a 50-50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi.
The principal objective was constructing and operating a world-class, large-scale, mass rapid transit system for India’s capital region. E. Sreedharan was appointed the first Managing Director.
On December 25, 2002, the first Delhi Metro corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari was inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This 8.2 km stretch marked the beginning of the DMRC network.
Over the next decade, it rapidly expanded the Metro’s reach across Delhi NCR with the completion of Phase I in 2005 and Phase II in 2010, several years ahead of schedule. From 6-coach trains initially to 8 coaches since 2010, the network grew exponentially from 8 km to 391 km.
Currently headed by Managing Director Mangu Singh since 2011, it is spearheading all major metro rail, monorail and high-speed rail projects in India and abroad.
Contributions Beyond Metro: Other Projects by DMRC
Renowned for spearheading innovation, it has extended its impact beyond city limits. The organization, equipped with a dedicated Business Development Department, engages in diverse projects, including consulting services.
The DMRC’s consulting prowess is evident in the meticulous preparation of detailed project reports (DPR) for metro and monorail projects across India, except for the Kolkata and Chennai metros. Notably, they played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the Thiruvananthapuram – Mangalore High-Speed Passenger Corridor, showcasing their expertise on a national scale.
Venturing into the international arena, the DMRC partnered with eight countries for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit system, marking their first project outside India’s borders. In 2014, the Government of Kuwait sought consulting services for their upcoming metro project, solidifying DMRC’s reputation on the global stage.
Beyond consulting, the DMRC established the Delhi Metro Rail Academy in 2002, serving as South Asia’s sole metro rail training institute. With a remarkable staff of 2000+, the academy has trained over 63,000 individuals, offering expertise to projects like Namma and Mumbai metro locally and contributing to international ventures in Jakarta and Dhaka. It collaborates with IIT to provide a PG diploma in metro technology, further emphasizing DMRC’s commitment to education and skill development. As we navigate through DMRC’s multifaceted initiatives, it becomes clear that its influence extends well beyond the tracks of the Delhi Metro.
Corporate Social Responsibility: Efforts Towards Making World Better
DMRC made massive contributions to the individuals and the economy through their services and a bunch of other initiatives they took. Some of the initiatives include:
- To overcome the global issue of water scarcity, the organisation invests in rainwater harvesting along all its blue metro stations.
- It has contributed enormously by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and claiming carbon credits. This further lowers pollution levels in the city by 6.3 lakh tons annually, thus helping to reduce global warming.
- All the metro stations provide wheelchair accessibility for visually impaired people. They have yellow stripes that act as a corridor for those people.
- It further opened a children’s home to support the slum and street children. It has classrooms, computer rooms, dormitories, and activity rooms to help children.
- They conduct HIV/AIDS awareness programs for their workers.
4 Lesser Known Facts About Delhi Metro
- In India, many women wear sarees and must avoid getting stuck in the escalators. The metro provides saree safeguards on both sides to provide safety from such accidents.
- The yellow and blue lines were the busiest, with around 70% of commuters travelling through them.
- The deepest point of Delhi Metro is below the Hauz Khas metro station.
- The highest point of the Delhi metro is at the Dhaula Kuan metro station, which is 23.6 metres high.
- Delhi Metro uses regenerative braking that slows down the train by converting the energy into a form that can be used immediately or stored.
“Momentum 2.0”: Reshaping Commuting in Delhi Metro
The application was launched to provide easy access to Delhi Metro services. It was a joint effort by Delhi Metro and AutoPe Payment Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Among all the essential features, the prominent ones include providing an integrated QR ticket system, shopping for groceries at the metro station, digital locker service, and other additional services, such as paying utility bills. This is a great initiative further progressing Delhi Metro’s way of providing a seamless experience to the users.
The Future of Metros, and how is it Concerned with DMRC?
Apart from providing immaculate services to the people of Delhi, the Delhi Metro has made significant contributions to the country at a social and economic level. It extended its arms towards international collaborations by serving the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit system. The organization has worked tirelessly and played an important role in ushering in a new era in the field of mass urban transportation in India.
