Palliative care in India is almost non-existent at the grassroots. This is a serious case for concern given that an estimated 5.4 million patients need it. However, it is available to just 1 per cent of them. Overturning this trend is the need of the hour and many organizations are stepping up to the plate.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been a core instrument in effecting this change. MSITEK, a global provider of SAP technology-enabled business solutions, teamed up with Ganga Prem Hospice as part of its CSR initiative. MSITEK will provide state-of-the-art solutions to improve efficiency and operations at the hospice.

Ganga Prem Hospice is a non-profit that provides palliative care to terminally ill cancer patients. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, the hospice provides medical, spiritual, and emotional support to both terminally ill patients as well as their immediate family members. MSITEK will leverage its business solutions to furnish the hospice with advanced capabilities when it comes to backend operations.

MSITEK will take on the role of Ganga Prem Hospice’s digital and technology sponsor in order to improve operational efficiency and enhance core capability. Additionally, a web portal for the hospice was create and went live last month. Regular maintenance work will be carried out by MSITEK along with updates as and when required.

Ashoo Tuli, CEO, MSITEK, was very positive about the whole initiative. “We are immensely honored to be doing our bit and contributing to the Hospice’s noble cause. We will continue to sponsor and drive many more CSR initiatives, both in near future and long term,” he declared.

The MSITEK team echoed similar sentiments about the tie-up. Sheelam Maurya, Managing Partner at MSITEK, who also heads CSR, was very enthusiastic. “We also have a vision of supporting the education and health needs of under-privileged children of the Hospice care patients and working on to drive this initiative in collaboration with Ganga Prem Hospice,” she opined.

Current palliative care services in India is woefully under-equipped and under-staffed to render any kind of satisfactory support. Insufficient healthcare infrastructure and a general lack of awareness further compounds the issue.

The swiftest way to tackle these challenges is to ensure that the efforts of organizations like MSITEK and Ganga Prem Hospice are not standalone projects. The government, corporate and the society needs to back such noble efforts through initiatives of their own.
