World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on September 10th every year, serves as a poignant reminder of the global issue of suicide. This year’s WSPD “Creating Hope through Action” theme underscores the significance of acquainting ourselves with the resources at our disposal. This knowledge equips us to take meaningful steps when faced with challenging situations.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 800,000 people all over the world die by suicide every year. In 2020, South Korea reported the highest suicide rate among developed countries, at 25.7 per 100,000 people. Following South Korea were Lithuania (20.3), Slovenia (15.7), Japan (14.6), and the United States (14.1). Conversely, Turkey recorded the lowest suicide rate among developed nations, with 4.4 deaths per 100,000 individuals.
This staggering statistic emphasizes the urgent need for collective efforts to combat this crisis. In recent years, corporations have stepped up their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to play a pivotal role in raising awareness about suicide prevention and offering support to those in need.
Several tech giants have taken significant strides in the fight against suicide.
World Suicide Prevention Day is a powerful reminder of the global challenge of suicide and the importance of collective action. Large and tiny corporations have taken significant strides in raising awareness about suicide prevention and providing crucial support to those in need. Tech giants like Google, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Spotify have implemented innovative CSR initiatives, while organizations like The Lego Foundation, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, The Trevor Project, Save the Children, and Crisis Text Line continue to make a profound impact.
By working together, corporations, NGOs, and individuals can make a difference in preventing suicide and providing vital support to those in crisis. As we commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day, let us recognize the progress made and renew our commitment to saving lives, one initiative at a time.
