Vedanta Resources Limited is one of the prominent leaders in the world’s Oil & Gas and Metal companies. Its operations include iron ore, oil & gas, silver, zinc, steel, lead, and aluminum & power in South Africa, Australia, India, and Namibia. With a focus on sustainable development and healthcare, Vedanta leveraged its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program for Covid-19 pandemic relief works and spent a sum of Rs.201 crores in FY21 and touched the lives of 15 lakh people.
Vedanta Resources, in collaboration with the Haryana government, expanded its healthcare infrastructure by inaugurating a 100-bed field hospital in Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurugram, Haryana for Covid-19 patients. All the beds were equipped with ventilator support and oxygen along with a team of doctors and nurses to provide the required help and care. Vedanta Chairman, Anil Agarwal said, “The second wave of the pandemic has been severe for the country. I am deeply disturbed to see the suffering of the citizens and the loss of lives. As a responsible corporate it is our duty to stand by the government and people to provide support by strengthening the required medical infrastructure.” Abiding by its words, Vedanta set up 10 field hospitals with 1000-beds for Covid-19 patients in Odisha, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka.
In the wake of the pandemic, various Vedanta Group companies like Hindustan Zinc (HZL), Sterlite Copper and ESL came forward to multiply the oxygen supplies for Covid-19 affected patients. Sterlite Copper was approved for supplying 1000 tonne oxygen per day from the Tuticorin plant, HZL supported with 1000 litre liquid oxygen from its industrial oxygen plant and ESL supplied 10 MT of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) on a daily basis, marking a total contribution of 20 lakh liters.
Vedanta also announced Anil Agarwal Foundation’s (AAF) ‘Swasth Gaon Abhiyaan’ which was responsible for complete healthcare services across 1000 villages in 12 states. Nand Ghar Program, an AAF initiative, partnered with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) to provide access to women empowerment, healthcare, education, and nutrition, with the successful setup of 2400 Nand Ghars across 11 states. It joined hands with Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-profit organization to feed the daily wage workers, slum dwellers, and laborers with its ‘Meals for all’ initiative during the lockdown period.
Vedanta Limited was awarded the ‘certificate of appreciation by the Gujarat Governor, Acharya Devvrat, in the presence of Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, for its remarkable COVID initiatives in the state.
