South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s CSR Initiatives: Promoting Sustainable Development in India

Coal has been a significant energy source in India, accounting for 55 percent of energy usage in the country. However, with the increasing awareness of the harmful impact of fossil fuels on the environment and public health, it has become essential to make proper and informed use of coal to secure our future. The state manages and distributes coal in India, with Coal India Limited (CIL) and its eight subsidiaries managing production and distribution.

SECL Contributions

CIL subsidiaries like South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) have a significant role in promoting sustainable development and mitigating the harmful impact of fossil fuels. One of the notable contributions of SECL is in the area of promoting education. The company has provided financial assistance for setting up smart classrooms in Bilaspur city government and English medium schools. SECL has also allocated funds for the facility of smart classes in various government schools in the Raigad district. Its efforts have resulted in Excellence Award from the World CSR Institute for its remarkable work in corporate social responsibility.

SECL’s commitment to sustainable development is evident in its efforts to promote skill development, rural development, and the environment. In addition, the company has helped persons with disabilities and veterans and promoted sports. By investing in these areas, SECL is contributing to the development of local communities and working towards building a sustainable future for all.

Achievement

SECL has also made significant contributions to the health sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company gave financial support to the state government for operating exclusive COVID Treatment Centers in Bilaspur and Ambikapur districts. With the help of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a CT scan, and MRI scan machine has been made available in CIMS Bilaspur at a low cost, making modern testing accessible to ordinary people. These initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare facilities to people living in remote areas. It has spent more than Rs 700 crore on various developmental works under CSR in the last eight years. Out of Rs 700 crore, about Rs 500 crore has been spent in Chhattisgarh.

Way Ahead

SECL’s contributions to various areas of development through its CSR initiatives demonstrate the importance of proper and informed usage of coal for securing our future. It can play a significant role in promoting sustainable development and mitigating the harmful impact of fossil fuels. Such companies, governments, and individuals must work together to ensure we make the most of our resources. This while safeguarding the planet and its people for future generations.

In conclusion, SECL’s CSR initiatives are paving the way for sustainable development in India. The company’s contributions to education, healthcare, skill development, rural development, and the environment demonstrate its commitment to building a better future for all.
