Samsung India’s citizenship initiative has proved its value beyond measure. In addition to helping transform India through technology and various programs, it has also come to the fore in the recent fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
As the global pandemic ran riots across the nation, Samsung India re-structured its citizenship initiative to focus on where it was needed the most – healthcare. In 2020, the initiative was ramped up to include 56 new Samsung Smart Healthcare centres in 19 states. These centres were meant to provide the staff with the latest medical equipment needed to diagnose and treat the deadly virus.
Recently, Samsung India added more Samsung Smart Healthcare centres at government hospitals, taking the total number of hospitals covered under its citizenship program to around 142. The new locations include Mumbai, Lucknow, Bangalore, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhopal, Jamnagar, Palakkad and Shimla, among others.
Each of these centres are equipped with modern digital x-ray and ultrasound machines developed by Samsung which are utilized for faster diagnosis of COVID-19 to ultimately save lives. In addition, efficiency and diagnostic capacities have increased significantly due to the portability as well as digital feedback from the machines, thus facilitating real-time monitoring and assessment by doctors.
As part of its citizenship initiative, Samsung India also pledged $5 million to central and state government funds for procurement of essential medical supplies and equipment for hospitals, amid India’s fight against the pandemic. Till date, $3 million each has been donated to the Centre and the states of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, while another $2 million has been spent on medical supplies including oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders and low dead-space (LDS) syringes.
Samsung India’s citizenship initiative has provided the economically weak and underprivileged sections of the society with access to quality treatment facilities through its Samsung Smart Healthcare centres. Government hospitals are the go-to places for financially constrained patients as the exorbitant charges of private hospitals are impossible for them to meet. The presence of Smart Healthcare centres in government hospitals is a ray of hope for those people as they can now avail the best treatment.
Through its citizenship initiative, Samsung India has set the precedent and a very high bar for other corporates to replicate. The success of the initiative and its programs can be attributed to the underlying principle of global citizenship that Samsung adheres to.
