Naveen Patnaik’s journey: An Indian Politician and founder of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a regional party in Odisha. He is the son of son of Biju Patnaik, former Chief MInsiter of Odisha. He has been the longest-serving Chief Minister in Odisha for over two decades now. He has worked towards eradicating corruption and poverty from the state. Through his mild mannerisms and courtesy, he has significantly contributed to the overall growth of the state and its people.
Patnaik was never interested in politics, though his father was a politician. He was passionate about literature and writing and pursued a Graduation in Arts from the University of Delhi. But his father’s demise pushed him to take the responsibility of being a Politician himself. He was popular since the start of his political career due to the legacy of his father but later gained reverence and love due to his honest and hardworking attitude.
Naveen Patnaik’s Journey in politics started after winning a seat in the Lok Sabha, which went vacant due to his father’s demise. In December 1997, he formed the BJD after rejecting BJP’s offer to join the National Democratic Alliance in coalition with other political parties. He also served as a Union Minister of steel and mines for 2 years from 1998 to 2000. As an expert in the field of Arts and culture, he was recognised around the globe. He also acts as a founder of the Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
He is a very compassionate and trustworthy leader. He always wanted a corruption free administration, and for the same he took strong measures against bureaucrats and BJD leaders who were involved in acts of corruption. . He also worked on specific programmes for improving and eradicating Poverty from the state. Recently, he also rewarded “Pramod Bhagat”, a Badminton player of his state, with a cash prize of ₹2crore for winning the Asian Para Games 2023. He is also supporting him for the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
He has been working to provide affordable houses to all the slum dwellers under “Housing for All in Urban Areas 2015.” Recently, he inaugurated three housing complexes under the project for economically weaker sections at Chandrasekharpur, Satya Nagar and Subudhipur. They were built by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) in public-private-partnership mode. Patnaik further expressed his happiness, and handed the keys to the project beneficiaries, ensuring the basic facilities, including water supply and drainage, were provided. Further, each beneficiary was provided ₹1.5 Lakh as a contribution.
Recently, there have been rumours that his ex-powerful private secretary, V K Pandian, will lead the state after him. He gave a voluntary retirement and was immediately given another position as chairman of Nabin Odisha and Vision 5T. Pandian is very hardworking and has been serving his responsibilities earnestly for a long time.
Him becoming the next Chief minister would not come as a surprise to the people as he has already built a good rapport with the people of Odisha while touring other districts. In this tour, he worked as a proxy for Naveen Patnaik. He has listened to their grievances and tried to provide them with solutions. But there are still conflicting thoughts about him as he is a pure Tamilian.
