In a country where talking about infertility is still considered a taboo, the advent of assisted reproduction saw a lot of uproar and cuff. Given the success of the treatment, the concept of assisted reproduction technology (ART) might be gaining traction in the west but is still relatively new in India.
However, its adoption has now caught the required momentum through the scientific prowess vested in the country’s fertility specialists. Their expertise and extensive experience has made India an ideal spot for people seeking medical fertility treatments. One such expert, Goral Gandhi, who is the Founder and Scientific Director of Indo Nippon IVF, Mumbai and a leading embryologist in India, has been a noteworthy advocate and practitioner of reproductive health and fertility.
Earning her master’s in Applied Biology from the King Edward Memorial Hospital, University of Mumbai, for her research work on “Quality Control in Laboratories”, Goral Gandhi’s interest in reproductive health and fertility deepened, and she decided to build a career in the direct day-to-day care of patients who were struggling to create their families.
The chance to offer a potentially life-changing opportunity to those who need it most was the driving force that eventually brought her to become one of the best embryology trainers in the country. Goral Gandhi’s expertise in the IVF domain as a Clinical Embryologist is backed by decades of experience in the design, establishment, and successfully running assisted conception centers all across the country.
‘Fertility medicine is a living field of science where you can help people successfully take the critical life step towards building their family. Every new discovery, no matter how inconsequential, is the building block of a breakthrough. All of these individual contributions from researchers add up to a formidable body of knowledge which is used to develop new treatments, technologies, and approaches to infertility. That is why I am committed to disseminating the knowledge I have to future embryologists, to help as many people in the best possible manner” – Goral Gandhi
Being the founder of The International School for Reproductive Medicine and Embryology (ISRME), a world-class training facility for medical clinicians and embryologists, Goral Gandhi has contributed globally in providing ART training and better practice.
Having trained over 500 embryologists, Goral Gandhi takes pride in how her former students have been successfully running their own independent units and helping couples cope with infertility. “Following the best medical practices both inside and outside the lab is what I have always preached and imbibed in my students,” she proudly asserts.
Although Goral Gandhi is deeply involved in patient consultation and care, her devotion to research continues, with her scientific publications and the will to learn. She has been invited as a guest speaker at over a hundred national and international meetings. She also has provided over 20 chapters in many medical textbooks on quality practice in embryology, along with efficaciously co-authoring several publications in national and international journals.
Known as one of the pioneers in the practice of Egg Freezing, Goral Gandhi has helped women take the empowering step of planning their pregnancies, and bringing healthy babies into this world. Most recently she has been involved in the assessment for fertility treatments, and evaluation of preimplantation genetic screening technology, and studying of differences among fertility-treatment-assisted pregnancies. She has other ongoing projects as well.
Even while having so much on her plate, Goral Gandhi aims to do justice to her profession through serving patients and educating medical students with best of her abilities.
