Karein Roshni: LG Electronics India’s initiative against visual impairment

According to a National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) report in 2021, there are approximately 12 million visually impaired individuals in the country – a third of the world’s blind population.

A majority of these individuals come from underprivileged backgrounds and as such are unable to get proper eye care and treatment. Many of these cases are reversible and the inability to get proper care dooms a lot of these individuals to a lifetime of misery.

Reiterating its commitment to serve the underserved, LG Electronics India announced KAREIN ROSHNI- Light For Every Sight, a CSR initiative on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary in the country. LG will team up with the Pan India chain of Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital and Sankara Eye Hospitals, India’s leading non-profit charitable eye hospitals for this initiative.

As part of the initiative, LG Electronics India will sponsor 8,700 cataract eye surgeries across India through five charitable hospitals, namely Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Delhi, Icare Eye Hospital, Noida, Sankara Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, H V Desai Eye Hospital, Pune, and Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati.

LG’s approach is not a novel concept. It has been sponsoring eye operations for people who cannot afford them since 2017. Last year, it partnered with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital and the Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF), wherein 1,000 successful cataract surgeries were conducted. Furthermore, 800 visually impaired individuals who could not afford the expensive procedure were successfully treated too.

Younglak Kim, MD, LG Electronics India, was enthused by the announcement and stated that the company’s vision over the past 25 years was to elevate the lives of the people through meaningful innovation. “Our latest KAREIN ROSHNI- Light For Every Sight CSR initiative is an effort to offer a gift of vision to the people who cannot afford quality care. LG has always been committed to introduce meaningful interventions. We are thankful to all our partner hospitals and the people associated with this initiative for supporting us in this cause,” he summed up.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Umang Mathur, Executive Director, Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Delhi, expressed his approval. “I believe avoidable blindness is still a big challenge in India and initiatives like KAREIN ROSHNI help us move towards our goal of eradicating needless blindness. I wish we can spread more awareness with our work and be the reason for vision,” he added.
