National Sports Day is a significant event celebrated in many countries around the world on 29th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players of all time. History of the Day

In India, this day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand Singh, who is often referred to as the “Wizard of Hockey.” He was renowned for his exceptional skills and contributions to the sport. His birthday was chosen as National Sports Day to honor his legacy and inspire future generations to take up sports.

About the Wizard of Hockey

Major Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, on 29th August 1905. He joined the Indian Armi in 1922 and quickly rose through the hockey team ranks. He led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He also won a silver medal at the 19228 Olympics.

After he retired from hockey, he continued to work to promote sports in India. He was the director of the National Institute of Sports in Patiala from 1956 to 1961. He was also the president of the Indian Olympic Association from 1956 to 1960.

He passed away on 3rd December 1979; was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1980.

  • The Tata Group has set up the Tata Sports Foundation. The foundation provides financial assistance to athletes and coaches and organizes sporting events.
  • The Reliance Foundation has set up the Reliance Foundation Young Champs program. The program identifies and trains young athletes in various sports.
  • The ONGC Sports Promotion Board has sponsored sporting events in India for over 50 years.
