It aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by eliminating discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against females.   • Hindustan Unilever: The Company’s CSR initiatives have focused on women’s economic empowerment and providing opportunities for skill development.
  • Tata Group: The Tata Group has undertaken CSR initiatives that address gender equality and women’s empowerment through economic means.
  • Johnson & Johnson: They have been involved in promoting gender equality by focusing on hiring more women in leadership roles and supporting organizations that empower women.

Companies can also implement policies that support women’s career progression, such as mentoring programs and networking opportunities.
  • Community Engagement: Companies can engage with local communities and support initiatives promoting women’s empowerment. For example, companies can partner with non-profit organizations that work to empower women and girls. They can also support initiatives that provide education and training to women, such as entrepreneurship programs and vocational training.

Government Legislature to Ensure Gender Equality

The Indian government has taken several legislative measures to promote gender equality. In 2013, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act was passed. This requires companies to have a policy on sexual harassment and to set up an internal complaints committee.

In 2019, the government introduced the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, which increased the duration of paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. These laws represent essential steps toward creating a more equitable society and reinforcing corporate commitment to gender equality.

However, while legislative measures are necessary to reinforce corporate commitments to gender equality. The companies must take proactive steps towards achieving gender equality and creating a more equitable world through CSR initiatives for gender equality. By doing so, companies can positively impact society, the economy, and the environment. While also fulfilling their social responsibility and contributing to achieving SDG #5.
