Amazon Web Services (AWS) has undertaken two projects as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It renovated Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) at Hythabad village in Shabad Mandal of Rangareddy district, Telangana. Furthermore, to ensure a steady supply of oxygen at the Maheshwaram Community Health Center (CHC), it set up an oxygen plant too.
The Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) at Hythabad provides education from the same village along with 15 other neighboring ones too. In total, 323 students (174 girls and 149 boys) are enrolled from class six to ten. The school has 15 teachers and uses both Telugu and English as the medium of instruction.
The school lacked the proper infrastructure and suffered from the want of maintenance. As such, the student had to contend with damaged toilets, lack of access to clean, potable water, leaky classrooms in the rainy season, and a worn-out school building. Additionally, students sat on the floor as the school had neither benches nor desks.
AWS’ initiative is focused on revamping the school building while providing desks and benches for the students too. Toilet facilities and access to proper drinking water will also be installed to ensure the students are able to concentrate on their studies.
Saji PK, Director of Data Center Operations (DDCO), Asia-Pacific, Japan, and China of AWS, expressed confidence that the school would go on to provide quality education to all the enrolled students. “More than 320 students from Hythabad and its neighboring 15 villages can now learn and grow in a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant environment at the renovated Zilla Parishad High School, with access to appropriate classrooms, recreation, and sanitation facilities,” he declared.
AWS also set up a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technique-based oxygen generator at the Maheshwaram CHC to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region. The plant can generate 500 liters of oxygen per minute and support 90 to 100 beds. AWS is also developing the CHC into a 130-bed facility.
Both the projects have been taken up through AWS In Communities, a community engagement programme by AWS, in partnership with Concern India Foundation, a leading non-profit.
